BASICS

• from the independent city state of Sangri, known for it’s tall, almost impenetrable city walls and huge, silver-plated gates that reflect the sunlight
• here, men are brought up to become travelling soldiers who journey through the rest of the land, plundering other towns and cities for precious metals to enrich Sangri
• because only a few men are left in the city at any time, women are in charge of protecting the city themselves; the women with this duty are called Gatekeepers and are infamous for being ferocious warriors
• their duty is to make sure no enemy gets past the city walls or penetrate the city gates, because their holiest of holies, the Temples, lie at the centre of the city and mustn’t be entered by anyone not Sangrilean
• their religion is centred around the Goddess of the Gates, Atheya
• Ailith is an orphan whose father never returned from the raids and whose mother was killed in active duty for the Gatekeepers; she has grown up in the Communal, an orphanage run by a group of elderly women, the Grandmothers
• she honours the memory of her mother and looks up to what she remembers of her, wanting to become a Gatekeeper like she was
• however, since she was born with silver hair, the colour of the Goddess, she was predicted to become a great priestess for the Temples, something she has no interest in
• initially, none of the Gatekeepers will take her on as their apprentice, but eventually, when she is 20, a late age to start, the great warrior, Saph, accepts
• now she has trained with Saph for three years and they are a curious combination of the older woman’s cool, calm focus and Ailith’s cocky and brash demeanour
• she is, nevertheless, shaping up to become one of the most skilled warriors the Gatekeepers have ever had in their ranks
• in the meantime, Ailith is haunted by visions she doesn’t understand, the Goddess seemingly visiting her in her dreams, intent on making contact with her, no matter how much Ailith refuses her
• after months of ignoring these dream encounters, a group of soldiers return to the city with a freed slave girl called Paseen from one of the neighbouring regions who ends up lodging with Ailith...
